Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of this announcement-09/25/2025- unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. MINIMUM BASIC EDUCATION:
Degree Requirement: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in meteorology, atmospheric science, or other natural science major that included:

• At least 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of credit in meteorology/atmospheric science including a minimum of:
  • Six semester hours of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics;*
  • Six semester hours of analysis and prediction of weather systems (synoptic/mesoscale);
  • Three semester hours of physical meteorology; and
  • Two semester hours of remote sensing of the atmosphere and/or instrumentation.
  • Six semester hours of physics, with at least one course that includes laboratory sessions.*
  • Three semester hours of ordinary differential equations.*
  • At least nine semester hours of course work appropriate for a physical science major in any combination of three or more of the following: physical hydrology, statistics, chemistry, physical oceanography, physical climatology, radiative transfer, aeronomy, advanced thermodynamics, advanced electricity and magnetism, light and optics, and computer science.

* There is a prerequisite or corequisite of calculus for course work in atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics, physics, and differential equations. Calculus courses must be appropriate for a physical science major.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
GS-12: Applicants must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: Issued fire weather forecasts and warnings for wildfires, prescribed burns, herbicide and pesticide applications, hazardous spills, and wildland and wilderness management. Assisted agency and National Weather Service personnel in developing and delivering training for fire management courses, including instruction in basic meteorology, weather observations, smoke management, forecasting, and warning services.

GS-13: Applicants must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience include: Issued fire weather forecasts and warnings for wildfires, prescribed burns, hazardous materials incidents, and land management activities. Provided advanced training and technical support to fire management agencies on meteorology, smoke management, and fire weather operations. Led interagency program coordination, conducted performance evaluations, developed new fire weather tools and services, and served as an advocate and liaison between federal, state, and interagency fire management offices and field units.

A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another.

Physical Demands: Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Prolonged demands of the job include long hours of sitting, intense concentration, and work at peak proficiency level with irregular breaks. The employee may be required to work extended shifts for extensive periods depending upon the level of activity. Travel associated with field visits and other administrative duties is required.

Working Conditions: Work is usually performed in an office setting. However, field travel is not uncommon.

The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, You must submit ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service. 1. Two-Page Resume which includes a list of all significant jobs held and duties performed, with dates specified in month and year format, and indicate hours worked per week.
