About the position:

An opportunity is available to lead a team of professionals to innovate, create and excel in the management of Gold Coast beaches. You will have responsibility for infrastructure management, environmental management, and customer service provision. The Coordinator Beaches is responsible for staff management and leadership of coastal management services to effectively plan, deliver, and maintain Gold Coast beach infrastructure, environmental values and customer service outcomes.

The Coordinator Beaches position forms a part of the Branch Leadership Team, with management responsibility for a team of nine officers, and annual budgets in 2020-21 of approximately $6M for capital works and approximately $7.8M for operational activities.

Key deliverables of the position: 

  • Lead and coach staff, technical experts and stakeholders, taking responsibility and accountability for program integration and delivery.
  • Provide leadership, ensure adherence to governance and program management methods, and foster partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the investigation and timely response to concerns regarding ocean beaches services, projects and assets.
  • Manage capital and operational plans and emerging challenges/technology in beach infrastructure planning and coastal engineering solutions, ensuring infrastructure and services are aligned, affordable and deliverable.
  • Develop, manage and report on plans and budgets for Council endorsement and ensure adherence to corporate requirements.
  • Manage knowledge and information for beach assets ensuring corporate data is captured, maintained, informs investment and meets legislative requirements.
  • Provide expert advice on analysis and interpretation of coastal data and monitoring, asset management plans, technical reports and presentations to inform future service planning and delivery.
  • Develop processes to foster innovation and collaboration with industry to provide continuous improvement and leverage opportunities to benefit Gold Coast beach management.

Your skills and experience should include:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Coastal Engineering, Coastal Science or similar qualifications, and substantial experience in allied engineering fields and coastal management.
  • Further qualifications and experience would be favourably considered, e.g. project management, electrical/ mechanical engineering, survey, geology etc.
  • Extensive experience in coastal engineering and management on a medium to large scale.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of coastal engineering design, construction and management.
  • RPEQ or considerable progression towards attainment of RPEQ.
  • Understanding of asset management plans and systems as it related to coastal structures.
  • High level resource needs analysis and application solution skills for major and minor projects.
  • Proven ability in financial management and human resource management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with particular emphasis in the areas of community consultation, building relationships and working with and teams, conflict resolution and assertiveness in order to resolve issues and meet changing community needs, particularly in relation to coastal engineering projects.
  • A thorough understanding of coastal processes and an awareness of the current and emerging impacts of climate change on coastal and estuarine environments.
  • Demonstrated decision making ability with the capacity to develop goals, plans, systems and projects to achieve the unit’s objectives and aspirations.
  • Good staff management and mentoring skills.
  • Detailed understanding of the range of both State and Federal permit requirements in undertaking related coastal works.
  • Current “C” class driver’s licence preferrable with experience in four wheel driving.
