Description
TENURE-TRACK POSITION IN ENVIRONMENTAL EARTH SCIENCE
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL SCIENCES
PITZER AND SCRIPPS COLLEGES
The Department of Natural Sciences, which houses the biology, chemistry, environmental science, neuroscience, and physics faculty for Pitzer and Scripps Colleges (two of the five undergraduate-only Claremont Colleges), seeks to hire a broadly trained Earth scientist who studies the dynamics of Earth’s surface and near-surface environments. We seek an environmentally focused Earth-scientist to complement existing departmental expertise in paleoclimatology, soil geomorphology, ecology, and atmospheric chemistry.
Candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching and development of a vibrant research program that fully engages undergraduate students. The tenure-track appointment will be made at the Assistant Professor level and begin in July 2026.
Potential areas of specialization include but are not limited to: atmospheric sciences, biogeochemistry, biogeomorphology, fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, oceanography, quaternary geology, stable isotope geochemistry, and sustainable agriculture. We are also interested in applicants whose research tools would contribute to department strengths and growing activity in the areas of computational/data science, (isotope) geochemistry, GIS, and/or remote sensing, however, we prefer candidates for whom such expertise is not a sole focus. Teaching responsibilities include participation in an introductory environmental science course integrating foundational concepts in biology, chemistry, geology, and ecology; an introductory earth science course integrating fundamentals of plate tectonics, rock composition, geologic time, and environmental change; and one or more upper-division course(s) in an area of the candidate's expertise. The successful candidate will join a vibrant intercollegiate (5 College) environmental curriculum and a community of other new faculty in climate-related fields. We particularly seek candidates who can build interdisciplinary connections with colleagues across the liberal arts curriculum.
A Ph.D. and a record of scholarly publication are required. Postdoctoral experience is preferred.
The salary for this position will range from $100,000-$110,000 and will be set based on experience.
Additional information about the department may be found at https://natsci.claremont.edu/.
Applications should be uploaded to https://apply.interfolio.com/172236 and must include (1) a cover letter describing your interest in and capacity for the position, (2) a curriculum vitae, (3) a description of your proposed, undergraduate-centered research program that includes your approach to engaging students in research, (4) a statement describing your approach to teaching and how you make learning accessible to students of varied learning styles, preparation, and scientific backgrounds, and (5) the names and e-mail addresses of three references. Please notify your references that recommendation letters will be required promptly should you advance to the semifinalist stage. Inquiries regarding the position may be e-mailed to Associate Professor Colin Robins at [email protected]. Review of applications will begin October 18th, 2025, and the position will remain open until filled.
The Department of Natural Sciences is an equal-opportunity employer. In keeping with its ongoing commitment to build and support a diverse and equitable academic community, the Department of Natural Sciences actively encourages applications from women and members of historically underrepresented groups.
